Championing Neurodiversity: ADHD Awareness Month at DanSci

At DanSci, October is a special time as we celebrate ADHD Awareness Month—a cause that’s incredibly close to our hearts. We believe in creating an inclusive environment where dancers of all abilities and neurotypes can thrive. Whether it’s supporting our neurodiverse dancers or sharing personal journeys, ADHD awareness is woven into the fabric of our studio.

My Personal Journey

As the owner of DanSci and a mother, businesswoman, and dancer with ADHD, I know firsthand the challenges that come with this condition. ADHD often brings with it an incredible burst of creativity, passion, and energy, but it also comes with struggles—especially when balancing the demands of running a studio and raising neurodiverse children.

Living with ADHD means navigating the chaos of thoughts, juggling endless tasks, and learning to manage time and focus. Yet, it's also a superpower. My ADHD has made me resilient, empathetic, and adaptable, and it’s shaped the way I approach both business and dance. Over the years, I’ve found dance to be a sanctuary—a place where my mind can channel its energy into something beautiful.

Supporting Neurodiversity in the Studio

DanSci champions neurodiversity in everything we do. From the structure of our classes to the flexibility we offer, we understand that every dancer is unique. Our goal is to create a supportive space where neurodiverse dancers, including those with ADHD, can express themselves and find focus and joy through movement.

We train our staff to recognize and respond to the needs of neurodiverse individuals, ensuring that each dancer feels seen and valued. Many of our teachers, like myself, are also neurodiverse, which means we have a deeper understanding of the strengths and challenges our dancers face.

The Role of Dance in Managing ADHD

For those with ADHD, dance can be transformative. Movement helps channel energy, improves focus, and allows for self-expression in ways that traditional academic environments might not. Dancers with ADHD often have heightened creativity, and dance can be a way to celebrate that while also building confidence and self-discipline.

Through my own doctoral research, I’ve been exploring the prevalence of ADHD in the dance community. It’s been fascinating to see just how many dancers, like myself, thrive in this environment thanks to their creative minds and ability to think outside the box.

Continuing the Conversation

ADHD Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to open up conversations about neurodiversity in the dance world and beyond. At DanSci, we are committed to creating a space where every dancer feels celebrated, understood, and empowered to be their best self.

This month, we encourage you to join the conversation, learn more about ADHD, and celebrate the neurodiverse dancers who bring such unique energy to our studio. Let’s continue to embrace each other’s differences and find the beauty in diversity, on and off the dance floor.
